Butterfly Table Tennis Question and Answer

Question: I’m a lefty, who gets attacked a lot with high arch loops to my backhand side. I am not able to step around to my forehand side. So I end up making a weak return with my backhand that either goes off the table or easy for the opponent to attack. How can I improve returning a high arch loop to my backhand side that can put pressure on my opponent? Jishan Liang NC

Answer:

Your Ask the Experts question was answered by Jishan Liang. Coach Liang is the head coach at NC International Table Tennis Inc. in North Carolina. Coach Liang’s response is as follows:

Hi Michael,  I received your email.  I am a left handed player as well so I can share from my experience. You can try to practice two changes:
  1. Practice backhand timing, adjust earlier.
  1. Practice backhand grip adjust.
I think these two points will help you improve your backhand.   Best,   Jishan
