WTTC Interviews: Cheng I-Ching

Posted on
  • Looking back at the 2021 WTTC Finals, how was the event for you?

I was able to reappraise thanks to the tournament. The results at the Olympics helped me confirm my level. I felt my previous efforts were rewarded when I stepped on the podium at the Olympics, the stage I had dreamed of. The World Championships this time was the first tournament after the Olympics. I could feel my progress after the Olympic Games, which brought me more confidence. The confidence was the driving force of my play, I could enjoy the matches, I had plenty of energy. Like in the past. I will strive for the better results in the future.

  • You were the mixed doubles semi-finalist and reached to the round of 16 in the women’s singles. What do you think of your results?

I think life is a fight against myself. I always reflect on my performance after each tournament to check if I did better compared to the last edition. I managed to achieve better results both in the mixed doubles and women’s singles. I would like to keep advancing towards my goal without losing my initial enthusiasm.

  • What is your impression on the first ever World Championships held in the Americas?

I was able to adjust myself and prepare for the tournament both physically and mentally, even with the big time difference. The matches themselves proceeded as usual, but there were also things fresh for me. The medal ceremony (the medals and the cowboy hats) was unique and very much an American western.

Also, my private coach Ms. Zheng has an American citizenship and I felt an affinity to America. Many fans came to the venue and I felt the warmth from many people as the tournament was held during Thanksgiving time. I enjoyed the competition held in the USA.
