How Do I Choose The Right Ping Pong Paddle For My Playstyle?

Table tennis, or ping pong, is more than just a fun game played at your local recreational center. In fact, more than 10 million people compete worldwide in sanctioned table tennis tournaments every year.

To play a good game of ping pong, you need to play hard and practice harder. You also need to be sure you’re using the best possible table tennis equipment. But how can you be sure you’re using the right kind of ping pong paddle for your game?

How to choose the right ping pong paddle
Speaking generally, ping pong paddles are made up of six basic components including the forehand sponge and rubber, the backhand sponge and rubber, the blade, and the handle. Together, these customizable pieces are the foundation of the paddle used to support your playstyle throughout the game.

When choosing between ping pong paddles in the future, consider the following:

  • Grip
The grip of the table tennis racket is especially important. Many players prefer a Shakehand grip while others prefer a Penhold grip. Shakehand refers to a grip where one holds the paddle as if you are shaking hands, and the term Penhold refers to a grip where the paddle is below the hand (almost as if one is using chopsticks).  How you prefer to hold your racket may determine the kind of handle option you prefer. For instance, a straight handle may be more comfortable or may help if you prefer a firm grip, a flared handle may help keep the racket in place even with a looser grip, and most penhold players prefer a shorter handle as they grip the handle only near the top.
  • Playstyle
How you play table tennis has a direct impact on the type of paddle you should be using. For instance, if you have a defensive playstyle that uses greater control and placement to beat your opponent you may prefer a paddle such as the Butterfly 401. If you’re more of an attacking player who favors long shots, the Butterfly Balsa Carbo X5-FL may be more to your liking. There are as many different paddle options as there are player styles.
  • Blade
The blade is the core of your paddle and it helps determine power, control, and feel. The blades are made with a variety of wood layers, often mixed with carbon or other synthetic fibers.  Blades vary greatly in regard to weight and the specifications can be matched to your playing style.
  • Rubber
The rubber on the paddle has the greatest effect on spin and power.  The rubber and the sponge work together to affect the ball as it is struck.  Some players will focus on speed and the trajectory of the ball while others will focus on spin or control.

It’s important to use the right ping pong paddles for your playstyle to ensure your game has the right support. For more information on ping pong rackets and ping pong supplies, contact Butterfly today.
