Canadian U19 Girls’ Team Shines at 2024 ITTF Pan American Youth Championships: Jessie Xu Leads the Way
The 2024 ITTF Pan American Youth Championships, held from August 31 to September 7 in Lima, Peru, showcased the incredible talents of young table tennis players from across the Americas. Among the standout performers was Canada’s U19 Girls’ team, which delivered an outstanding performance, securing a silver medal under the leadership of their player, Jessie Xu.
Entering the competition as the 6th seed, Team Canada faced tough opposition but rose to the occasion with remarkable determination. In the group stage, Team Canada was paired with the formidable U.S. team. Jessie Xu, taking the lead as the first player for Canada, displayed exceptional skill and composure, winning both of her matches. Her victories were instrumental in Team Canada’s historic win against the U.S. — a triumph achieved for the first time in several years — with a final score of 3:1.
Following this momentum, Team Canada continued their winning streak, defeating Team Chile with a dominant 3:0 victory in the next group match. With this, they secured a top position and received a bye in the quarterfinals.
In the semi-finals, Team Canada overcame Puerto Rico with another strong performance, paving the way to the final match. Unfortunately, despite their valiant efforts, Team Canada fell to Brazil in the finals, losing 0:3 and finishing with a well-deserved silver medal.
For Jessie Xu, this championship marked her second appearance in the U19 category after her debut at the 2022 ITTF Pan American Youth Championships in Rosario, Argentina. Now 16 years old, Jessie has shown significant progress since her first outing. This year, she claimed a bronze medal in the Women’s Doubles and reached the quarterfinals in both the Girls’ Singles and Mixed Doubles events, a marked improvement from her previous performance.
Next month, Jessie is set to represent Team Canada for the second time at the 2024 Pan American Championship, where she will compete at the adult level. With her recent success and continued growth, all eyes are on Jessie as she prepares to showcase her talent once again. We wish her the best of luck and look forward to seeing her continue to make her mark on the international stage.
