John McDermott won the 2023 Rhode Island Table Tennis Butterfly Fall Open. It was the New Jersey native’s first tournament victory in Rhode Island after several attempts, but he did so in dominating fashion. McDermott advanced through the round robin without dropping a game, and then repeated that feat in the elimination rounds with 3-0 wins over Yuzuru Sasamoto, Steve Hopkins, and Murali Mani. The Final Four were John McDermott who defeated Steve Hopkins and Murali Mani who defeated David Jia. McDermott had three tight games with Mani, but secured the victory with a 3-0 win.
Yuzuru Sasamoto won U1950 with a 3-1 win over Larry Bavly. Dan Vogt won U1700 with a 3-1 win over John Murphy. The 1450 title went to John Murphy (over Bruce Paster) and the U1200 title went to Steve Vongsiri (over Homan Leung).
There were 50 players from 7 different States. Each event was full – with 16 players divided into 4-person round robins. The next Open in Rhode Island is planned for May.
