Thanks for taking a few minutes to chat with us, Jenson. We’re looking forward to seeing you take on the world’s best at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games. *The opening ceremony begins on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, and the Games conclude on Sunday, September 8, 2024.
What does representing your country in the Paralympics mean to you personally?
Representing the United States on the biggest stage in sport is truly an honor and a dream. I am so lucky that I am able to represent my country at the Paralympics again and make everyone proud!
Give us an idea of what you’ve been doing to prepare. How has your training regimen evolved as you prepare for the Paralympics in table tennis?
I have upped my training hours these past two months significantly. I was also in a training camp in Charlotte, North Carolina for two weeks where I trained a crazy amount of hours!
What is the biggest physical challenge you face as a table tennis player with a disability, and what do you do to overcome those challenges?
The biggest physical challenge I face is definitely keeping my body healthy. As I struggle with wrist and shoulder problems. I see a chiropractor / physio once a week and do other things to keep my body loose and feeling good.
We are just a little over two weeks away. What are your goals for Paris, and what do you need to do to reach those goals?
A medal is definitely a goal at this Paralympics. This time around I feel like I am one of the favorites due to my recent results this year. I have been working very hard and will give my very best to achieve either a bronze, silver, or gold medal!
Has there been any special preparation on your end, to help you prepare in regard to strategy? Anything in regard to your approach to the game specifically designed for key opponents, or for your Class?
As the use of different types of rubbers such as pimples are so commonly used in my disability category. Intense training sessions against those different types of rubbers have really helped me learn more about how to play against them and what my game strategy needs to be.
How do you stay mentally focused and maintain your composure during high-stakes matches?
I try to live in the moment and take every point as it’s each own. I don’t try to look too much in the future as it will just hurt me and dwell on negatives that already happened. I will always remain positive and try to find solutions during the match.
Has there been a “signature” Van Emburgh moment? Can you share a memorable experience from previous competitions or a defining moment in your athletic career?
My most memorable moment in my table tennis career is being the 11th seed and underdog and coming out with a bronze medal at my first ever Paralympic Games. Maybe that’s my “signature” Van Emburgh moment… so far.
What advice would you give to aspiring Paralympic athletes?
I think the best advice I could give to an aspiring Paralympic athlete is that hard work really does pay off and to never give up. Set your mind to that sport that you love to do and give your best. There will be moments where things will be more difficult and in those moments are what will define you to become stronger and better.
