The 2018 Butterfly Labor Day 2-Person Teams Tournament is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, September 1-2, 2018.  Five rated events and $3,300 in prizes at the Triangle Table Tennis facility in Morrisville — making this a four-star rated USATT event in a five-star facility.

This teams event will feature a combination of singles and doubles.  Each match is first to three wins with the format being singles/singles/doubles/singles/singles.  The first team to win three times is the winner, and every team match will involve both players competing in singles and doubles.  Combined ratings of the two team members determines the event with the rating tiers set to U-2500, U-3000, U-3500, U-4000, and OPEN.

Stephanie Sun (a 2200 level player from nearby Cary, NC) competed in a 2-Person tournament at Triangle Table Tennis last year.  She described her experience this way:

“It was a really fun experience for me. Compared to a normal tournament, you can choose to team up with someone (maybe someone you always want to avoid in playing sanctioned events). You may find the relationship becomes much better after the tournament between you and your teammate. Or you may choose to play with your best friend.”

Stephanie continued, “The format of the 2-person tournament allows players to play doubles matches as well as singles. So, besides the excitement from singles, you can relax just a little bit every other return in the doubles match.”  She then joked that, “I found that this takes my pressure away compared to singles-only tournament as I can finally legitimately blame someone else for the loss.”

Triangle Table Tennis has a reputation for unique tournaments.  They are the annual host of the Cary Cup tournament, a 160 player giant round robin that is one of the largest tournaments in the US.  In 2018, they have also run other non-standard tournaments and events including a Winter Two-Person team tournament, a Brazillian Teams event as a part of two tournaments, and May’s “Upside Down” Open where the prizes are largest for the lowest rated events. Triangle Table Tennis continues to find innovative ways to draw tournament players from up and down the East coast, and to cement North Carolina as a regional table tennis hub.

The Triangle Table Tennis center is an amazing facility with 25,000 square feet of playing area, professional quality Gerfloor flooring, 17-foot ceilings, high intensity lighting, and 40 Butterfly tables.  They have been host to Olympic Trials, US Team Trials, Collegiate events, and high-level training camps.  This is an ideal location to compete in an environment tailored for elite table tennis.
