WAB Club Feature: California Table Tennis, and the Angel’s Cup Butterfly Team Tournament
(By Steve Hopkins)

The annual Angel’s Cup Butterfly Team Tournament is scheduled for November 23/24.  It is a signature Southern California event for a signature Southern California club.

The format of the tournament is three-person teams with two divisions based upon rating.  Both divisions will have a $1000 prize for the first place team, a $500 prize for the second place team, and $300 per team for third and fourth place.  That is $4200 in combined prize money for the weekend for this non-sanctioned event.  Teams will play in a preliminary round robin with teams then advancing to single elimination rounds (the top teams to a championship elimination round and the bottom teams to a consolation elimination round).  Limited spaces are available – Tournament information is available here.

This event will be hosted again this year by California Table Tennis.  California Table Tennis is located in Rosemead, California, in the heart of the San Gabriel Valley outside of Los Angeles.  It is a unique, full-time table tennis facility with 16 Butterfly tables, professional rubber flooring, and some of the best playing conditions available in the United States.  The club has 200 active members of all ages with events and coaching available to players from age 4 to age 80.

The club features six coaches from China and Gao Jun, one of the most accomplished players in US History having be the US Women’s National Coach, a 9-time US Women’s Champion. and a 4-time Olympian.  (View Gao Jun’s USATT Hall of Fame Profile here)

With so many players, coaches, and elite athletes training at one facility, the club if busy during weekends as well as weekday evenings.  Junior players have individual lessons during the week and group lessons on the weekends.  Senior players take advantage of times in the mornings.  There are frequent visits by international teams and some of club members are up and coming elite players: including Grace Yang, Rachel Yang, and Nicholas Tio.
