(by Steve Hopkins)

The premiere events at the US Open have now reached the Quarterfinals in Ontario, California.   Top seeded Kou Lei of Ukraine moved past Californian Tao Wenzhang 3-1 to reach the Quarters.  Kou will face Daniel Gorak of Poland.  Gorak has been dominant thus far, winning each of his matches 3-0.  Another Californian, Zhang Xiangjing, will face Ma Jinbao – a Chinese player who has been playing this month in a number of events including winning the LA Open.

In the bottom half of the draw, chopper Wang Wei will face New Jersey junior Aditya Sareen.  Sareen is the only player to make the Top 8 with an upset, knocking out 2700 Czech player Jiri Martinko  in their Round of 16 match.  The final pairing in the Quarters will be US Team Members Nikhil Kumar and Zhou Xin.

In Women’s Singles, Lily Zhang was extended to a sixth game to take out 15 year old Sally Moyland in the Quarterfinals 4-2.  Zhang is the top seed in the event and she will face Shao Luoxuan in the Semifinal on Tuesday.  Second seeded Amy Wang also logged a 4-2 win, defeating Wang Yixiao in their Quarterfinal match.  Wang will face Cui Xiaohua in the other Semifinal matchup.

Play will resume later today in Ontario, California.
