Triangle Table Tennis: January 2017 News and Happenings

Happy New Year! We’re excited to share some of our upcoming events and the new opportunities starting up in 2017 at Triangle Table Tennis. We have new membership benefits this year, and a cool fundraiser for a NC non-profit in February.  Also, the new early-bird discounts on on-line registrations for 2017 tournaments and camps are already catching on, and offer players a great reason to plan ahead. We have three exciting tournaments coming, including:
  • 2017 Winter Two-Person Teams tournament this weekend (USATT 4-Star – registration closes on 1/19), and
  • 2017 Triangle February OVER – 40 TOUR Tournament (USATT 2-Star – early bird discounts end on 1/19), and
  • 2017 Butterfly Cary Cup Championship in late March (USATT 4-Star with $18,000 in total cash & prizes, including $5,000 in cash & prizes for the A Division Champion – early bird discounts end on 2/15)
This month’s newsletter covers all this news and more, but first, we’ll hit the highlights of recent news at our Center since the December newsletter.
AJ Carney Will Represent U.S. at the
World Championships of Ping Pong
AJ Carney v Sharon Alguetti Hardbat Finals 2016 US Open, 2 of 2
AJ Carney, our very own Assistant Manager and Senior/Elite Coach, is heading to London to compete in the World Championship of Ping Pong at the end of January!

In the 2016 U.S. Nationals in July, AJ won 2 National Championships, in both the Hardbat and the Sandpaper events. In December, AJ defended those titles and won the Hardbat and Sandpaper Championship events at the U.S. Open. You can check out more of the videos from those hard-fought matches on our YouTube channel.

We’ll be cheering AJ on from this side of the Atlantic, and if you’d like to do the same, you can catch the live streaming of The World Championship of Ping Pong on Sky Sports on January 28-29.  GO AJ!!

We’ve Enjoyed Hosting Y Guides Outings
A big shout out to the “Flying Monkees” — a local Y Guides “tribe” shown in this photo!

We’re having a blast introducing our Center and the sport of table tennis to new participants from the Y Guides, a cool YMCA program in the Triangle area. Y Guide tribes, consisting of either Dads and daughters, or Dads and sons, have been enjoying active, weatherproof outings that are fun for all ages. They’re also earning ping pong badges to add to their tribal vests. How fun is that?!

Cary Chinese School Awards
The Cary Chinese School has 7 groups of 12 children each who participate in private group lessons each weekend. They recently concluded a 13-week “season” of lessons, and presented awards for the young players who have been building skills and having fun as a group. The new season is already underway, so don’t be surprised to see some rising stars in the Center! Congratulations to all!

We enjoy providing regular instruction for other private groups, such as the Impact Team, as well. If you have a group (of any age!) that would like to set up regular private group lessons, just let one of our managers know, and we’ll be happy to work with you on options.

We’re Adding New and Enhanced Benefits for Members
In this pre-Valentine’s Day season, we won’t be coy. We love our members! So, they enjoy free access to open play, discounts on group lessons and merchandise, and other perks. And, in 2017, they’ll have still more benefits! Some new benefits are good throughout the year, and a few are only available through Valentine’s Day.

Are you a member who loves Triangle Table Tennis? Share the love! Starting in 2017, Triangle Table Tennis members will be able to bring a new, first-time visitor with them any time they come to the Center! Each first-time visitor who is accompanied by a member can enjoy one free introductory visit and open play in our Center.

Are you a member who knows someone who might enjoy a membership at Triangle Table Tennis? Spread the love! Any current member who refers a new member who purchases a pre-paid 3-month membership will continue to earn a $25 gift card as a referral reward, but in 2017, if that new member purchases a 6-month membership, then the current member will instead receive a gift card equivalent to one month of that new member’s membership fee. And between now and Valentine’s Day, if that new membership is a pre-paid membership of 12 months or more, we’ll double the referral reward!

Are you considering a new membership at Triangle Table Tennis? Feel the love! Anyone who purchases a new membership for the first time will receive a gift card equivalent to their membership activation fee. And between now and Valentine’s Day, if that new membership is a pre-paid membership of 12 months or more, we’ll also add one month’s membership fee to the gift card — doubling its value!

Are you a former member who’s been away? We still love you! Through Valentine’s Day, anyone with a lapsed membership who purchases a pre-paid membership of 6 months or more will receive a gift card equivalent to their membership re-activation fee.

Are you a member who’d like to find more playing partners? We love match-making! Let our front desk know if you are looking for someone to play with, and we’ll do our best to find you a partner. We’ll also be setting up a mechanism for players to directly communicate with each other in first quarter, so stay tuned for more details.

Pongfest for Pets on February 10th
Triangle Table Tennis is proud to partner with the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine to host a very special fundraiser from 6:00 to 9:00 pm on Friday, February 10th, with proceeds benefiting the NCVMF (North Carolina Veterinary Medical Foundation) Companion Pet Assistance Fund. More details are available on the Pongfest for Pets event brochure. Come on out and have some fun while supporting this wonderful non-profit cause!
Discounts with Early On-line Tournament Registration

The 2017 Tournament Schedule is on our web site, and registrations are available now for many tournaments.

We’ve rolled out a new incentive in 2017 for players to enroll early for tournaments using on-line registration. We’d like to think it’s a “win-win”… It helps us plan when players use the on-line registration process on our website and get their enrollments in at least 1 month before the tournament date — and in 2017, it helps you, too!  Most of our 2017 tournaments will offer a 10% early enrollment discount for on-line registrations completed at least 1 month in advance. (The Butterfly Cary Cup Championship is slightly different, with greater discounts and lead time requirements.)

We have two of our most popular USATT 4-star sanctioned tournaments coming up in 1st Q. We’ll continue to add registration forms and online registrations for other 2017 tournaments over the next few months, so keep your eye on our Tournaments page, and register early to get in on the competition — and the discounts!

January 21 & 22, 2017: Triangle Winter Two-Person Teams Round Robin Tournament– coming up this weekend, so get your registration in by Thursday, 1/19!

We’re kicking off our 2017 competitions in a big way! The 2017 Triangle Winter Two-Person Teams Tournament is a USATT 4-star sanction level tournament, with over $3,000 in cash and prizes. It has 5 rating level events: U-2500, U-3000, U-3500, U-4000, and Open Teams. Each event other than the Open includes both individual rating limits and combined rating limits for teams, so players can look forward to close competition. Additionally, all events are Round Robin in the first round, guaranteeing a large number of singles and doubles matches for all players. See the enrollment form for more information. This is one of our most popular tournament formats, and there are only a few team slots left at each level. Last call for registrations!

February 18 & 19, 2017: Triangle February Over-40 Tour Tournament

We’re trying a new format in February, specifically for adult players over the age of 40. If you’re over 40, and looking for a competition with other players who can claim the same, this tournament’s custom designed for you! This USATT 2-star sanction level tournament is also an ITTF Tour Event and has over $1,500 in Cash and Prizes!  Saturday has the first rounds of a GIANT Round Robin Main Event, with final rounds of all 4 divisions completing on Sunday.  Also on Sunday are separate Round Robin events for men and women, grouped by age ranges (over 40, over 50, over 60, over 70 and over 80). There’s also a Mixed Doubles event to round out the last day. More details are available on the enrollment form. Early online enrollment discount ends on Thursday, 1/19! Players who enroll using on-line registration before 1/19/2017 can enjoy a 10% discount on event fees, so don’t delay!

March 30 – April 2, 2017: 2017 Butterfly Cary Cup Championship

This Butterfly Tour Event is a 4-day, USATT 4-star sanctioned tournament with a GIANT Round Robin Main Event on Saturday and Sunday that will have live video streaming by Butterfly for the final matches of the A Division. It also has 7 other Round Robin events (including rating level events, an Open singles event, and a Hardbat event) on Thursday and Friday. Winners will divide a prize pool of over $18,000 in Cash & Prizes & Giant Trophies, with $5,000 of that going to the Division A Champion! This is our most popular tournament of the year. It attracts top players from across the country and the world, and in prior years the GIANT Round Robin Main Event and multiple preliminary events sold out. Those are good reasons to register early, and another is that discounts are available before 2/15/2017. See the enrollment form for more information on how to qualify for the discounts, and get your registration in early because these events are filling up fast!
