WTT Feeder Fremont Tournament by Joanna Sung

(By: Joanna Sung)

Being able to compete in the first ever WTT tournament held in the U.S filled me with not only excitement to play against the top players on home soil, but also excitement for the rapid growth of table tennis in the U.S. Overall, I participated in a total of three events: women’s doubles, mixed doubles, and singles. I played with my sister Rachel in women’s doubles and Liang Jishan for mixed doubles.

In women’s doubles and singles, I lost to France, who proved to be undeniably much stronger. Through these matches, I gained a better understanding of the areas I personally needed to work on. I needed to learn to adjust faster to different balls, improve my footwork, and also strengthen the quality of my shots. Furthermore, I hoped to also learn from the French players who both had very strong first openings and counter loops. Liang Jishan and I lost a close match of 2-3 to Rachel and Dan Liu. For our first time playing together, I believe that we did pretty well. We lost the last game 9-11. Naturally, there were some shots I wished to perform better in, but both sides played well! I sadly did miss a high ball in the fifth round, which shifted the momentum of the game. Rachel and Dan ended up surviving all the way to finals, where they lost to the top seed from Taiwan composed of Chuang Chih-yuan and Chen Szu-yu.

Overall, I had a wonderful experience. TTA did an amazing job in holding the event. I took many photos with the top players such as Chuang Chih-yuan and Chen Szu-yu. Both players were extremely kind and watching them play was a great experience. Thank you to ICC for helping me train for the tournament and Bowmar Sports for their continuous support! See you all at the next tournament.
