With the relaxation of entry protocols for entry to Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rican Table Tennis Federation hopes to reach their registration goal of 100 teams for the upcoming Puerto Rico Open event.

As of today, there are 60 teams registered with entrants from Guatemala, Mexico, the United States and Puerto Rico, said the President of the Federation, Iván Santos.

Among the registered teams are those from clubs such as Utuado, Corozal, Naguabo, and Olympic Hostel, as well as teams from North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, California, and others from the United States.

The Puerto Rico Open will be held from April 8 to 10 at the Convention Center. This event was to be held in 2021, but was postponed due to the pandemic.

“We have two months to go and we understand that with the easing of entry into Puerto Rico, we are going to reach 100 teams. People are aware of what the entrance to Puerto Rico is like and they must bear it,” Santos said.

Today, athletes traveling to Puerto Rico can enter with proof of vaccination or proof of a negative test taken within 48 hours before or 48 hours after arriving on the Island. International travelers must meet the same requirements with the difference that the negative test must be no more than 24 hours before or after arrival.

The Puerto Rico Open expects to set up dozens of tables in the halls of the Convention Center to facilitate a tournament organized with multiple divisions and events.

It will be the first Puerto Rico Open organized by the Federation, which hopes to institutionalize the event on an annual basis as a way to generate income for the organization’s self-sufficient operation, Santos said.
