Portland Paddlers Win MLTT Season 3

Why is there a Golden Game?  For Moments Like These.

With the entire season hanging in the balance, every match played, every grueling semifinal battle now behind them, these two teams have fought through an exhausting war of singles and doubles — only to find themselves locked in a dead heat, separated by the slimmest of margins: a single point.

And now… it all comes down to the Golden Game.

The Golden Game was forged for exactly this kind of heart-stopping drama. It was built as the final, desperate lifeline for the underdog — one last shot at glory when everything else has failed. It quickly strips away the safety net of an early lead and forces the very best out of every athlete at that table.

It is the last-second field goal with the game tied. It is the fade-away jumper as the final buzzer sounds. It is the deep, uncomfortable breath before the game-winning free kick.

This is why the Golden Game exists — for championship moments like these, where legends are born in a single, electric instant.

Today, defending champion Carolina Gold Rush and the top seeded Portland Paddlers met in the Final.  The Gold Rush dominated the Chicago Wind yesterday 15-6, and the Paddlers topped the Princeton Revolution 14-7.  Today’s matches were nearly deadlocked throughout Portland up 2-1, then the teams tied 3-3, then Carolina up 5-4 and 8-4 before Nikhil Kumar’s heroics for Portland narrowed the difference in match scores to 8-7.

It only took one point in the Golden Game for that lead to be gone.  And then the drama built – one to one, then two-two, then three-three.  Finally, it was Nikhil Kumar again – fighting to give his squad a two point advantage at 5-3.  Sid Naresh scored two in a row to give Portland a 7-3 lead, and then after a time out it was extended to 8-3.  Now its Carolina’s turn as Enzo Angles wins two in a row.  Kotomi Omodo is able to split with Angles, giving Portland a 10-6 lead.  Is it over?

Edward Ly splits with Lundquist leaving the Paddlers up 15-9.  Eugene Wang gets 3 of 4 and narrows the lead.  Sun wins two against Sid Naresh all of a sudden, the lead has shrunk to 2.  Momentum shifts again – with Naresh winning two.  Omodo can only take one point off of Enzo this time giving Portland the 19-17 lead.  Hernandez wins the first point (20-17).  Zhang wins the next (20-18).   Hernandez wins the next point.  Portland wins 21-18 in an amazing final push.  Portland rises up to claim the victory with an amazing Golden Game moment.
