Ping Pong Parkinson Reaches Rhode Island

Posted on

(by Steve Hopkins)

This weekend, Rhode Island Table Tennis hosted its first Ping Pong Parkinson’s session, bringing the rapidly growing program to the Ocean State. Ping Pong Parkinson (www.pingpongparkinson.org) now has more than 400 chapters in 31 countries, each offering sessions to people living with Parkinson’s disease in their communities.

The organization’s premise is that table tennis is uniquely suited to the task. As its website explains, “ping pong’s unique stimulation of multiple brain and body systems, including balance, coordination, dexterity, visual and auditory processing, concentration and decision making is believed to promote physical fitness and neuroplasticity – the brain’s capacity to improve its structure and function.”

Sunday’s session was organized and led by Brown University student Medha Krishna. Participants began with stretching and warm-up exercises before moving on to forehand and backhand strokes. They clearly enjoyed playing against one another, learning from RITTA’s coaches, and sharpening their hand-eye coordination.

Beyond the table tennis itself, the program offers a welcoming space for people with Parkinson’s and their caregivers to connect, share their experiences, and build friendships.

Sessions will be held every other Sunday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Entry is free, paddles and balls are provided, and no prior table tennis experience is necessary. The goal is an accessible, friendly environment where everyone can enjoy the benefits of the sport.

If you’re interested in future sessions, contact Medha Krishna at medha_krishna@brown.edu or call Rhode Island Table Tennis at 401-769-6666.
