Eugene Wang and Mo Zhang Win Canadian Singles Titles

Posted on

(by Steve Hopkins)

Eugene Wang won his second National title today – a dominant performance that included sweeping his first four matches 3-0 before finally dropping a single game in his 3-1 Finals win over Edward Ly.   While Eugene’s performance in Men’s Singles was impressive, Mo Zhang matched his results in Women’s Singles (dropping just one game in the whole tournament) on her way to sweeping Sunny Zhang 3-0 in the Final.  Mo Zhang also teamed with Edward Ly to win Mixed Doubles.  However, the most impressive statistic if this tournament was that this was Mo Zhang’s eleventh singles National Championship – excellence and dominance that has been present at the highest levels in Canadian table tennis for a decade and a half.

The 2026 Canadian Table Tennis Championships encompasses both Senior and Junior events.  There are 23 events this year with the five featured National Title events: Men Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles.  There are also a pair of over 40 age events:  Singles events for both Men and Women.  And then there are are Singles and Team events for Boys and Girls at U11, U13, U15, U17, and U19 (3 events per age tier).

The Doubles National Titles  for Men’s Doubles went to Jonathan Li and Xezuan Wang, the Women’s Doubles title went to Ivy Pan and Sunny Zhang, and the Mixed Doubles title went to Mo Zhang and Edward Ly.  Over 40 Men’s went to BJ Oyewo who topped Mazen Sanoubar 3-1.  Women’s Over 40 went to Dong Liu with Akiko Iwase finishing second.

The Juniors events are just underway.  We’ll provide updates on the rest of the events soon.
