There were some great matches in this Round Robin. The ones played by Lisa against Ralph and against Brandon, in particular, were very tight.  At the end of the RR, there was a tie between Lisa and Gerson.  Both ended with 4 victories and 1 loss. However, Lisa passed to the next, finals round in first place because she beat Gerson 3-1. Third place went to Brandon Loi and fourth place to Ralph Goodman.

The finals match was Lisa vs Gerson. Unfortunately for our dear Lisa, Gerson took some notes from his prior match against her and adjusted his approach in the finals. It paid off very well. This match ended with a clear victory for Gerson, with the partials of 9-11, 5-11, 6-11.  Congratulations, Gerson! You played your first Q Tourney and took it home…!  Congrats to Lisa, as well! You are always fighting for the best positions in the Q’s!

B Division was formed by Tan Loi, Nick Johnson, Tony Brangoccio, Matt Sharkey, Val Gorodin and Camy Lau.

Tan vs Camy : 12-10, 11-1, 11-9

Val vs Camy : 11-8, 9-11, 6-11, 11-13

This RR had some great matches, like the one of Nick vs Val, which “The Sweaty Giant” managed to pull off in the fifth game. Nick also went to five games against Tony “Tension” and barely made it. Nick had a very hard time with Matt, too. As usual, this match went to five games, and again Nick managed to take it in the fifth game! At the end of the RR, there was a tie between Tan and Nick. Both ended with 4 wins and 1 loss. Tony “Tension” beat Tan in a great match that Tony took in the fifth by 11-13!  Since Tan beat Nick 3-0 in the RR, Tan passed in first place to the finals, followed by The Sweaty Giant.  Third place went to Tony Brangoccio and fourth to Matt Sharkey.

The finals match was Tan vs Nick.  This was, no doubt, the tightest finals match so far in our 2015 Q Tourneys and was intense throughout all 5 games!   (Let’s not forget that Tan “killed” Nick in the RR stage with 11-7, 11-6 and 11-8).  This finals match had it all: long rallies, lucky points, amazing comebacks, as well as very sad unforced errors!  After attacking Tan’s chops with pretty good precision, Nick barely took the first one by 10-12. Tan came back to play his very best and safest defensive game to take the next two by 13-11 and 11-9. With a very impressive performance, and like he has never played against Tan before, Nick took the fourth game by 8-11. Unfortunately for The Sweaty Giant, in the fifth game Tan created a big gap in the score right away. In the blink of an eye, things were 9-3. Nick played his very best and managed to reach a change of serve with 9-7! Then at 10-8, after another long rally, the score was 10-9! Nick was about to level things up, and had the service on his side to make it happen.  But after taking his time to think about where he wanted to go with his serve, he hit the ball a bit too hard, and it sadly went off the table. Tan was able to breathe again at that point.  After seeing his opponent come very, very close, Tan barely took another Q Tourney!  Congratulations, Tan!  And congrats to you, too, Nick! You both played very well throughout the whole Q, but mainly you both played an unbelievable finals match that was so much fun to watch!

A Division had two groups. Group 1 was formed by Vinay Chandra, Hai Xue, Loi Pham, Trent Casi, Carlos Pinzon and John Miller.

Vinay vs John : 11-5, 11-5, 11-5
Hai vs Carlos : 11-7, 11-4, 11-6
Loi vs Trent : 11-4, 11-8, 12-10
Vinay vs Carlos : 11-9, 10-12, 11-2, 10-12, 11-4
Hai vs John : 11-1, 11-8, 11-1
Loi vs Carlos : 11-9, 11-9, 11-4
Vinay vs Trent : 11-5, 11-4, 11-6
Hai vs Loi : 11-1, 11-3, 11-4
Trent vs John : 11-9, 11-0, 11-0
Vinay vs Loi : 11-4, 12-10, 11-9
Trent vs Carlos : 11-5, 11-6, 9-11, 11-8
Vinay vs Hai : 2-11, 5-11, 2-11
Loi vs John : 11-5, 11-9, 11-9
Hai vs Trent : 11-2, 11-3, 11-3
Carlos vs John : forfeited.

Hai Xue passed the RR stage in first place undefeated, followed by Vinay, who only lost to Hai.

Group 2 was formed by Basil Ibegbu, Edward Yue, James “Kung” Fu, Jian “Sword” Yao and Terrence Blackman.

Basil vs Terrence : 11-4, 9-11, 11-3, 11-3
Ed vs Jian : 11-6, 11-6, 11-7
James vs Basil : 5-11, 6-11, 9-11
Jian vs Terrence : 11-5, 11-4, 11-9
Ed vs James : 12-10, 11-3, 11-4
Basil vs Jian : 11-5, 10-12, 11-3, 11-6
James vs Terrence : 11-5, 11-6, 11-9
Ed vs Terrence : 11-5, 11-0, 11-3
James vs Jian : 4-11, 5-11, 11-7, 11-9, 13-11
Basil vs Ed : 8-11, 11-5, 11-4, 11-7

Basil passed the RR stage undefeated in first place, followed by Ed in second, who only lost to Basil.

The first semifinals match was Hai vs Ed, with a clear victory for Hai with partials of 11-4, 11-6 and 11-4.  The other semifinals match was Basil vs Vinay, which was a great match to watch! It was a long five games, also with long and disputed rallies throughout most of the match! The partials were 11-6, 11-8, 8-11, 6-11 and 11-8.

The match for third place was forfeited by Vinay, as our Indian friend “ran out of gas” after his long and demanding match against Basil. This left Edward Yue in third place for this Q Tourney.

The finals match was Hai vs Basil. Other than the second game, where Basil was able to keep up with the constant dead, low, fast and long balls from Hai, it was a relatively easy win for the Chinese player. The partials were 11-5, 8-11, 11-6 and 11-7.

Congratulations again, Hai…! You took another Q Tourney home!
