Ask The Experts: Jörg Bitzigeio, No. 316 Butterfly Table Tennis Question and Answer

Question:

  1. Please explain vibration and reaction. I’m deciding between Hadraw Shield and Diode V which have quite different ratings for these, and I’d like to understand them better.
  2. I want to try Butterfly Feint Long 3 but am unsure of whether to try OX, .5, 1.1 or 1.3 sponge. Could you also please explain the differences generally among them?

Thank you!!!

This Ask the Experts question was answered by Jörg Bitzigeio. Coach Bitzigeio’s response is as follows:

Hi Brian,

Thanks for your email and your interest in the Butterfly equipment for defensive players. Since I was a chopper when I used to play, your questions are really interesting for me.

You asked for an explanation in regard to reaction and vibration. Reaction means the quantified reaction of blade, here the higher the number, the more reaction you feel. Vibration means the quantified vibration frequency, here the higher the number, the less vibration you feel. Comparing Diode with Hadraw Shield, with the Diode blade you feel more reaction and less vibration because both number of the Diode are higher. I myself play the Diode since many years and can recommend it strongly!

In regard to the different sponges of the Feint Long III, at first the biggest difference is between playing without sponge (OX) or with sponge (0.5, 1.1 or 1.3). OX is good for close-to-the-table defense and the pips with sponge are designed for an aggressive chopper who also likes to attack with the pips as the Feint Long III features a softer more flexible top sheet combined with a softer sponge and this is ideal for long range heavy chopping strokes with maximum control. The thicker the sponge the easier to control the pips, but the spin reverse can also be less then.

Enjoy!

Jörg
