Ask The Experts: Rachid El Boubou, No. 284 Butterfly Table Tennis Question and Answer

Question: What determines the throw angle of a racquet? The blade or rubber? Is the desired throw angle a matter of preference or is it my style of play; i.e., aggressive, all round, distance from the table (close, medium, far)?

This Ask the Experts question was answered by Rachid El Boubou. He is a Coach at Triangle TT and his response is as follows:

Randy, Thanks for your question regarding throw angle. Question 1: What determines the throw angle, blade or rubber? Answer: It is the rubber that determines throw angles. All rubbers have a pip alignment, and that determines if the trajectory is long or short, as well as high or sharp. Question 2: Is the desired throw angle a matter of preference, or is it my style of play; i.e., aggressive, all-around, distance from the table (close, medium, and far)? Answer: The desired throw angle is organic to how you play your shots. The rubber is only there to enhance that. If you have a more upwards swing with your stroke, then the balls that you play will travel deeper on the table. I would suggest a sharper trajectory rubber like Tenergy 05, to bring the ball to the middle of the table making it a safer landing shots. If you have an aggressive driving type of stroke, I would suggest a longer trajectory rubber like Tenergy 64 FX, or the newly released Dignics 64 that will give the ball your play on the table more depth. Additional Notes: To get this balance right you have to take note of the type of stroke you have created, and the rubber you choice has to compliment that. When you play your shots you can feel for one second that where the shot lands on the table is no natural for you. If so, you need to chance your stroke, or you need to find a rubber that compliments your play. Have Fun Along The Way! Coach Rachid
