Ask The Experts: Wenting Zha, No. 279 Butterfly Table Tennis Question and Answer

Question:

When I receive a low short underspin serve or return I can either take a long slower stroke with blade open to return the ball low and short (two bounces) or I can make a shorter faster sharp push back the ball low and short. Which is the better return?

Your Ask the Experts question was answered by Wenting Zha. She is one of the coaches at the Champion Star International Academy. Coach Zha’s response is as follows:

Hi Richard,

Thanks for reaching out to us, I would like to assist with your question.

According to your description, I would say that the shorter, faster sharp push is recommended to do more often. When we receive, we would like to make it fast so the opponent won’t be able to get ready on time. However, table tennis is complex, can’t really say that something is bad or good, it is more about variation and strategy.

Hope you find the answer is helpful.

Regards,

Wenting Zha
