(By Steve Hopkins)

In Men’s Singles, Canada’s Eugene Wang will face Germany’s Tobias Hippler in one semifinal and Japanese teammates Ryohei Kanoya and Takeshi Atsuya will face off in the other semifinal.  Kanoya reached the semifinal by defeating Canada’s Luc Sicard (4-0), Costa Rica’s Alfredo Sanchez (4-0), top seeded American Kanak Jha (4-1), and California’s Ma Jinbao (4-2).  Takeshi went through Texas’ Michael Tran (4-2), California’s Tian Ye (4-0), Germany’s Gerrit Engermann (4-0) and the Netherlands Rajko Gommers (4-2).  Eugene Wang was the third seed in the event and has beaten a pair of Japanese players and New Jersey’s Li Jian to earn his place in the semifinal.  Tobias Hippler defeated Dan Liu and Tao Wenzhang (both from California) before overcoming Koji Uezu of Japan (4-3).  The final matches will be held on Friday afternoon.
The USA will be represented in each of the Women’s Singles semifinals.  Lily Zhang fought back from a 1-2 deficit to defeat Japan’s Miyuki Tamaishi 4-2 to earn her spot in the semifinals.  Zhang will face the tournament’s second seed, Denmark’s Nina Mittelham, who has moved forward relatively easily thus far.  New York’s Liu Juan defeated Japan’s Kyoka Kato to earn her spot in the semifinals.  Liu has been dominant thus far losing only one game in her three knock-out matches.  Liu will face Japan’s Eka So.  So is fresh off of two upset wins – defeating California’s Angela Guan (4-0) and then winning over the tournament’s top seed, Jennifer Wu of New Jersey 4-1.  Like the men, the remaining matches in Women’s Singles will all be played on Friday.
The Junior and Cadet singles have all concluded.  Canada’s Edward Ly logged first place in both Junior Boys and Cadet Boys.  Jeremy Hazin of Canada finished second in Junior Boys, and Aditya Godhwani from California finished second in Cadet Boys.  Jiaqi Lin of Texas won the Junior Girls event with a 3-2 win over Tiffany Ke of Maryland.  Californian Rachel Sung finished first in Cadet Girls, with fellow-Californian Faith Tung the runner-up.
