Paddle Weight

Posted on

(by Logan Rietz)

Many times, when customers order a new blade or paddle, we get requests to find a blade in a particular weight range.  While we are happy to accommodate our wonderful customers, blades aren’t the only thing to consider when trying to keep your paddle around a certain weight. Other factors include:

  • Rubber, both the particular model and the sponge thickness
  • Side tape/edge protection
  • Additional accessories

Now, there can be a lot of different reasons players monitor their paddle weight.  A heavier paddle can produce more power, while a lighter one will be more maneuverable.  Some players also have to consider injuries, either prevention or management, in their equipment choices.  No matter the reason, there is more than one way to solve the equation.

Some blades will have similar specifications, but different average weights.  Here are a few examples (in grams):

SK7 Classic Blade11.19.390
Outerforce CAF11.39.185

BalsaCarbo X7 22 Blade11.210.875
Outerforce ZLC11.311.186

Timo Boll ALC Blade11.810.384
Harimoto Innerforce Super ZLC Blade12.010.590

We also have a graphic that shows the average weight of all our blades in reference to each other.  You can check that out at https://butterflyonline.com/butterfly-blade-weight/.

Rubber weight is also something that should be looked at since the differences could be doubled on a paddle!  Many players are looking for a couple grams difference, which can absolutely be achieved by changing up your rubber.  Generally speaking, harder sponge rubbers will tend to be heavier, and softer rubbers will be lighter, though there are exceptions.  The easiest way to shave some weight off with rubber sheets is to go with a thinner sponge option.  For argument’s sake, let’s say you use the same rubber on both sides.  Going from the thickest sponge (which is the most common) to a thinner option could be significant.  I’ve weighed several rubber sheets still in the packages (since all the packaging is the same) and compared the differences in grams.  Keep in mind, these are not the weights of a sheet cut to the shape of a blade.

We also have a chart that shows the average weights of our rubber sheets in relation to each other.  You can find that at https://butterflyonline.com/butterfly-rubber-weight/.

Some other things that can add weight are:

Grip tape

Padded side tape

Power/lead tape

Extra layers of glue while building (I built a paddle today with the standard 1 layer on each sheet and side of the blade.  This added 2 grams to the overall weight of the paddle)

As I say in many of my equipment discussions, there are always tradeoffs.  The important part is to prioritize what you want out of your gear to determine the best way forward for YOU and your game.
