🎥 Episode 4: Ask The Expert Live With Logan Rietz | How do you choose your rubber?

Posted on

(by Bowmar Sports)

In the recent live session with Logan, a major focus was placed on how rubber selection especially sponge thickness and density plays a critical role in paddle performance and overall feel. Players often choose rubber based on popularity, but the live highlighted that construction details matter just as much. One of the first topics discussed was sponge thickness, which can range from no sponge at all (OX), commonly used with hardbat and many long pips rubbers, all the way up to very thick options like 2.7 mm (Zyre 03).

Sponge thickness directly affects how much speed and spin a player can generate, as well as how easy the rubber is to control. Thinner sponge options, such as 1.5 mm, typically produce less speed and spin but provide greater control and consistency, making it easier to keep the ball on the table. Thicker sponges like 2.1, 2.5, or even 2.7 mm unlock higher speed and spin potential, but they demand better touch and technique.

The session explained how the same topsheet can feel completely different depending on the sponge underneath. The key takeaway from the live was that players should not only think about spin ratings or speed claims, but also consider sponge thickness and density to match their playing style and the feel they want from their paddle.
