(by Steve Hopkins)
When the Sugarhill Gang released “Rapper’s Delight”, few could have imagined either the immediate or long-term effect. The song introduced rap to millions and changed the path of hip hop. It took an urban sound, spun it into a cultural movement. It popularized a different type of rhythm and rhyme. In short, this one song changed the music industry.
The result was “Rapper’s Delight,” a song that borrowed the bassline from Chic’s “Good Times” and layered it with playful, braggadocious rhymes. It was recorded in a single take and released as a 12-inch single—the format favored by DJs and dance clubs. The track quickly climbed the charts, reaching No. 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping charts in Canada and the UK.
Rap has changed over recent decades, but the lyrics of “Rapper’s Delight” were like many in other songs that followed – fun and filled with boasts and humor. With that same goal of fun and humor, here is a Bowmar sports version, with a table tennis twist:
CHOPPER’S DELIGHT
Now what you hear is not a test, I’m rallyin’ to the beat
Me, the paddle, and my crew, we’re bringin’ heat to your seat
You see, I am Wonder Spin, and I’d like to say hello
To the topspin, the backspin,
the loop and the chop, the flick and the flow
But first I gotta chop-chop the rally to the rally
Say up jump the smash to the bang-bang volley
Let’s chop, you don’t stop
Spin the rhythm that’ll make your paddle pop
Tackiness Chop, yeah, I’m slicin’ low,
My rubber’s got grip like a pro’s got flow,
I loop, I block, I counterattack,
You try to smash, but I send it back.
I’m rockin’ that Tenergy, fast and tight,
My footwork’s slick, my timing’s right,
From the basement leagues to the world tour scene,
I’m the king of the table, the spin machine.
A with a ping-pop, the paddler to the paddle
The chop, chop-block and you don’t stop the battle
To the bang-bang boogie, say up jump the rally
To the rhythm of the volley and beat
