Mental Training Tip – Table Tennis is a Team Sport: Why Cohesion Matters

by: Dr. Alan Chu, Ph.D., CMPC)

When you think of table tennis, you might picture two players locked in an intense rally across the table. While individual skill is crucial, success in table tennis, especially the mental aspects, extends far beyond personal capability. This is particularly true for team events, such as different Butterfly team tournaments, Major League Table Tennis matches, and the recent 2024 ITTF Mixed Team World Cup. Just ask any member of the Chinese national team who has dominated team events. Their success isn’t just about individual brilliance—it’s about team cohesion, the power of “we” over “me” that is evident from the players’ interviews.

I’m really happy that we were able to defend our title in the second ITTF Mixed Team World Cup. Our entire team was very united and cohesive. Over the course of the tournament, we played 11 matches, and each one felt different. We gave it our all with the goal of winning the championship. I’m very grateful to the Chinese table tennis team and to the coaches and teammates by my side. Together, we worked as one to achieve this victory – Sun Yingsha

Power of Task and Social Cohesion in Table Tennis

As a mental performance consultant, I have observed how two components of team cohesion— task and social cohesion—contribute to athletic success. But what exactly do these terms mean for table tennis players?

Task cohesion refers to how well team members work together toward common goals. In table tennis, this might look like practice partners pushing each other to perfect their serves, sharing insights about opponents’ playing styles, or collectively analyzing match footage. When players are united in their pursuit of excellence, everyone benefits from shared knowledge and experience. Social cohesion, on the other hand, is about the interpersonal bonds between team member. It’s the trust built during countless training sessions, the inside jokes shared during tournament travel, and the emotional support provided during tough matches. These relationships create a psychological safety net that allows players to take risks and perform under pressure.

During team events, cohesion become even more critical. Players must transition between supporting their teammates from the sidelines and performing individually on the table. Strong task cohesion means everyone understands their role and responsibilities, whether they’re playing or not. Social cohesion helps maintain team morale through wins and losses, preventing individual setbacks from affecting team performance.

Even in individual tournaments, players who train in cohesive environments often have an advantage. They arrive better prepared, having benefited from diverse practice partners and shared strategic insights. They also tend to handle pressure better, knowing they have a support system regardless of the outcome.

Practical Strategies for Coaches and Players

For local club coaches and developing players, building team cohesion doesn’t require national-team resources. Here are some practical steps:

  • Create structured practice sessions where players rotate partners and share feedback. This builds task cohesion by ensuring everyone contributes to collective improvement.
  • Organize team activities outside of training. Simple things like team dinners or watching major tournaments together can strengthen social bonds.
  • Establish a mentoring system where experienced players guide newcomers. This develops both task coordination (through skill sharing) and social connections.
  • Celebrate team and individual successes equally, reinforcing the connection between personal growth and team achievement.

Conclusion

Remember, table tennis may seem like an individual sport on the surface, but the most successful players rarely achieve greatness in isolation. Whether you’re competing in team events or individual tournaments, the support and collaboration of a cohesive team environment can elevate your game to new heights. By fostering both task and social cohesion, table tennis teams and individual players can enhance their confidence, resilience, and overall success

After all, in table tennis, as in life, we are stronger together. How will you contribute to building stronger cohesion in your table tennis community?
