San Juan Host City for 2016 Latin American Championships

January 8, 2016 – Home for the ITTF Junior Circuit Finals and ITTF Cadet Challenge, the last occasion the two events were held at the same time, San Juan, the capital city of the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, is the home for the forthcoming 2016 Latin American Championships.

Organized under the direction of Ivan Santos, the President of the Puerto Rico Table Tennis Federation, play commences on Monday February 1st and concludes on Sunday February 7th.

Nine Events
Furthermore, an intense week of action is on the menu.

The full gambit of nine events is on the menu: Men’s Team, Women’s Team, Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, Mixed Doubles, Under 21 Men’s Singles and Under 21 Women’s Singles.

Olympic Games System
In both the Men’s Team and Women’s Team events, the Olympic Games system will be used.

Three players per team, four singles and one doubles, should the contest go the full distance, with no player allowed to compete in more than two matches.

Initially in each event, teams will be drawn into groups of three or four with the outfits finishing in first and second places in each group advancing to the second stage where play will be conducted on the knock-out principle.

Entry Eligibility
Each national association is eligible for one entry in each of the Men’s Team and Women’s Team events.

In the Men’s Singles and Women’s Singles competitions the number permitted is four per national association; however, the host nation Puerto Rico, may enter eight players in each event.

Doubles Events
A similar system applies in the doubles events. In each of the Men’s Doubles and Women’s Doubles events, the maximum for visitors in two pairs, for the host it is four pairs.

Similarly, in the Mixed Doubles event, it is four pairs for visitors; eight for the hosts.

Format
All three doubles events will be best of five games throughout; in the Men’s Singles and Women’s Singles competitions, the initial group stage will be best of five games, the main draw best of seven games.

Meanwhile, in the Under 21 Men’s Singles and Under 21 Women’s Singles events, for players born on or after Sunday 1st January 1995, play throughout will be best of five games, the knock-out principle throughout with no restriction being placed on entry numbers per national association.

Two Bronze Medals
In all events, semi-finalists receive bronze medals; there are no play-off matches for third place.

Closing Date
The closing date for entries is Tuesday January 12th.
