2023 Fremont Butterfly February Open Tournament

The 2023 Fremont Butterfly February Open featured a wide range of players over the past 3-day weekend. There were 10 rating events, Open Singles for any rating, 3 juniors’ events, and also now a senior’s event.

Players battled for 3 days for trophies, medals, and bragging rights to be champions, finalists, or medalists. The players to reach at least 2 event finals were Rohan Bubna (1st place-Juniors 18 Years & Under, 2nd place-Under 2200, 2nd place-Juniors 14 Years & Under), Aneeka Rao (1st place-Under 400, 1st place-Under 700), and Karthik Kalle (1st place-Under 1600, 2nd place-Juniors 18 Years & Under).

The next two tournaments will take place on April 28-30 and June 16-18, 2023.

Day 1-Friday, February 10

The first day of play usually is reserved for the more entry-level events. The under 25 event final featured friends Siddanth Gogikari and Ashrith Reddi winning 1st and 2nd, respectively.

The Under 400 featured Aneeka Rao winning the event for the 2nd tournament in a row over Aditya Shyam who won 2nd despite a mild fracture in his playing thumb!

The Under 100 event featured top seed Mabel Mu winning over first-time tournament player Aditya Kota. The Under 50 event featured Champions in Training Program member Hasini Deepak winning 1st for the first time in tournament play over first-time tournament player Daiwik Bitra.

Day 2-Saturday, February 11

The second day of play kicked off with the seniors over 50 event which rejoined the tournament event list after a long break. Michael Marinas had his enthusiasm and superb, unique play playing with both hands and long pips taking the title with a close 3-2 win over Arsalan Afrakhteh.

Day 3-Sunday, February 12

Open Singles, kicked off play on Sunday, February 12. The Open final featured Fremont TTA coaches Shashin Shodhan and Rohan Sirisena Manamendra Gedara winning 1st and 2nd, respectively.

The Under 2200 final featured top seed Yuyang Ying winning over Rohan Bubna 3-2 in the final. The Under 1900 had Alexander Rozhin winning over Rishi Singh 11-9 in the 5th game in the final. In the juniors 18 years and under event, Rohan Bubna got another tournament title over Karthik Kalle in the final.

The juniors 8 years and under featuring our future had a strong field and will provide a bright future.  Fremont TTA Tri-Valley Branch students came out on top with Ria Chatterjee 1st, Jai Jadhav 2nd, Ali Afrakhteh 3rd (Neil Nambiar of FTTA also got 3rd).
