WTTC Interviews: Kristian Karlsson

1.How do you feel about winning the men’s doubles championship?
I’m of course very happy to have taken a world championship gold medal for my country. Im very proud but still after 2 weeks I don’t really feel it yet. I believe that after the last 3 matches this season I will go home to Sweden and have 1 week holidays. There I think I will be able to relax and really enjoy this gold medal which I’m of course extremely proud of.

2.What do you think was the winning factor in beating the two Chinese pairs?
To beat both the Chinese pairs was of course very hard, we did believe in our game plan, that we could win in the short-short game and to the perfection we did, we managed to take control of the game more then we have been able to do before.

3.What was your plan for the doubles final, and how did you manage to win?
After the quarter final where we beat Fan Zhendong and Wang Chuqin I felt like we really had the chance to win it all. After the quarter finals I was happy but not very happy as I should be when you take a world championship medal. I became extremely focused and all I wanted was to celebrate AFTER we have completed the tournament. Our plan for the final was to keep the same level as we had displayed in the previous matches. It is very hard to keep that level in a whole tournament and that is what I’m most proud of. That we match after match played to our absolute best. The Koreans where able to challenge us in the short short but we proved that we made a few less mistakes which is crucial in the doubles.

4.What are your thoughts on the first WTTC held in the United States?
I think the first Championship in the US was a success despite some trouble with the technical stuff the first days. During these hard times I’m still impressed by how it was made. I hope to be able to attend similar events back in Japan soon where I like it the most!!
